A seller has two No.4 Mk1s for sale and I'm not quite certain which factory produced them (he's not all that familiar with Enfields, so he's not entirely certain, either). He sent me a couple of photos (below). I think the first one might be a Maltby, but I'm not sure. Can anyone out there help me figure this out? I also noticed that the photos show the flip rear sight. Does this mean these might actually be No4 Mk2s? (Or perhaps a Mk1/2 or Mk1/3?) These are the only two photos he sent me and he's out of town until next week, so I'm hoping there's enough info in the pics to help ID these rifles. The type of rear sight doesn't affect the nomenclature of the rifle, since the rear sights were oftentimes swapped out, especially after WWII, when many 300/600 L sights were replaced. If the No4 has only a notch cut in the receiver to remove the bolt rather than the little release "button", it is a No4 Mk 1. No4 Mk2s have the trigger assembly attached to the receiver rather than attached to the triggerguard/magazine housing assembly. Last Edited By: eagle7 09/19/08 11:30 PM. Edited 1 times.

Also the serial numbers start with 1 (one). Usually up on the side of the receiver it will say #4 Mk1. The Mk 1* were made in the US or Canada and not in the UK where Maltby is. The Mk 2s didn't start up until '49 so these didn't start as Mk 2s. If, as eagle7 says, they have the trigger hung from the receiver they would be Mk 1/2s. These were converted (upgraded?) by having the trigger 'moved' to the receiver. The Mk1/3 were converted from the Mk 1*. After the war a lot (most?) of the #4s were Factory Thorough Repaired (FTRd) and a variety of parts installed. Many went to other countries like Italy and Greece and Turkey (oooooohhhhhh! especially Turkey 8-) ) and those folks used a great mixture of parts.

I'm relatively new to Enfields, but I thought they might both me Maltbys. Good to know I was in the the right ballpark. As far as the years ('42 and '44) is one more desireable than the other from a collector's perspective? They're both priced the same. Is it maybe just a matter of snagging the one that's in the best overall condition? Sadly, I can't (or won't) afford both, since I'm trying to save up some dough for one of those Finn 28-76 rifles that are supposed to be on the market soon.
